Basics Tips In Stump Grinding

By Jocelyn Davidson

Cutting trees gives fine timber for use in various applications but also leaves behind ugly stumps. The size of stumps depend on the size of the plant cut. Stump grinding involves use of a grinder to grind off remnant stumps after felling trees. This article discusses some of the reasons for carrying out this activity. The basic steps involved in the process are also discussed in this article.

Landscape beautification is one of the reasons it is necessary to remove stubs from a place. Stubs lower the beauty of lawns and property as a whole if they are located at strategic locations. They also pose safety concerns to people passing by. Stubs become invisible over time after being covered with grass. They can therefore cause people to stumble over them easily.

The market currently has different kinds of grinders and one can choose from the many models. The models range in cost from low to very high. The large complex units are very costly and are mostly used by companies that specialize in removing stumps. Since the costs involved in purchasing a new unit are high, it is cheaper and more convenient to rent the machine for a day or so.

Today, grinders are leased to clients at various charges by many companies. Hiring grinders can be expensive depending on the size, model, and fuel consumed. The lease period can vary from a day to several weeks. Clients may have the device transported to their preferred destination by company trucks in some situations. Transportation may be free or the charges may be part of the overall charge.

Clients are given some tips on how to use the device safely without causing harm to oneself or nearby property. For clients that cannot handle the job, it is best to hire an operator as well. This is important in avoiding possible charges due to damages done to the device as a result of poor handling or lack of skills. Some companies require the client to return the machine to them after using while others collect it after the expiry of the lease period.

This method provides a high level of efficiency in removing stumps of different kinds. The stub must be assessed first before beginning the job. The assessment should target height, wood type, and size among other aspects. After completing the assessment, the next step is clearing the foot of the item of debris and foreign objects. Stones, metal, and glass among other forms of debris may cause damage to the teeth of the grinder if not removed.

After all debris has been cleared, the item is then reduced to the lowest level possible. Reducing the height speeds us the grinding and reduces the amount of wood shavings formed. At this point, the actual removal job can now begin. When grinding, grinder wheel is held in a position directly over the wood. The grinder wheel is raised using a hydraulic lever.

Before starting the grinding, the grinder wheel should be rotating. The wheel should be lowered slowly after powering the machine on. The machine leaves a square hole afterwards hence one should not be surprised with it.
