Conventional, Realistic And Lucrative Earthwork Estimating

By Christa Jarvis

Estimating the volume of excavations is not an easy task. This is largely because you will be dealing with material that is not visible and you do not know what you will encounter before you start digging. The process of earthwork estimating is quite tricky but it needs not be.

Furthermore, you might have to spend more fuel and extra man hours. You therefore need to anticipate this before you start the work. A closer examination of the soil profile from the local geological station can give you proper insight before you quote for such a sensitive job.

One of the worst mistakes you can make when quoting for such a job is to fail to account for other items that may come up in the course of operation. Since you may not know what will happen when the job begins, it is always important to keep your options open and discus with the client that in case the job requires extra hours when you find a rock, the estimate should be flexible enough.

The need to transport the material to distant areas must also be accounted for depending on the distance. Check with the local codes to see what they charge per meter. However, you do not want your figure to be too high especially if you are tendering from the job since the client is not likely to assign the highest bidder.

Therefore before you embark on the project, you need to visit the site. This is mandatory since it will help you to see any unusual materials that may bring you trouble later in the process. Remember that red soil is easier to excavate than black cotton or rock. The weather will also play a part since some machines will have difficulties working in the mud.

Calculate the amount of hours you will require to complete the task and the cost of hiring the machines necessary to finish the work. Include other labour and fuel expenses and add your profit margins to arrive at a tentative figure. While it is the role of the contractors to locate the utility lines, it will be your responsibility to find exactly where they are and take precaution to avoid destroying them.

Others will read deeper into the contour maps and while they may not show any rocks in the plan, the occurrence of contours too close to each other or in the event that the contours meet suggest the presence of a cliff and consequently plenty of rocks. There is software that can make your work easier, help you to give discounts where you can since you will understand the difficult areas and the overheads that come with the job.

In such a scenario, you will find that a small contractor, on the one hand will have an edge over the bigger companies who have fancy offices and a large personnel to support their operations. On the other hand, large companies have large jobs in plenty and therefore enjoy the economies of scale. If the two companies buy a printer, the small company will have less paper to print and the equipment will end up being more expensive to run.
