A Disaster Survival Kit Is Critical Should You Need To Leave Your Home

By April Briggs

When disasters occur, it rarely matters whether it is natural or man made. A natural one is something like a flood or earthquake. A man made one would be a foreign invasion or the extremely least likely scenario, in a real world, of Zombies coming. You will need to be able to meet this disaster with a plan. The first part of that plan would be to have a disaster survival kit, ready to grab and run.

Experts in this field, those who should know what they are doing, say you should have three days of supplies, such as food and water to give you a chance when something bad happens and you need to leave your home. Looking at this and the other items you need will help you understand the critical nature of planning for this event.

Everyone needs water for hydration and cooking. You can get by for many days without a bath or shower, however, thoughts about providing this sanitary need should be contemplated for the not too distant future. One gallon a day of water, for each person, is needed. If there is not a source of running water, whether through a series of pipes or at least a stream, bottled water is important to pack.

Water that can be found in rivers or streams can be purified with purification pills obtained form many sources, online and off. They will have to be placed in the container, such as a milk jug, filled with water and shaken and then allowed to sit for a while, usually with lid off. A little bleach can also help purify water and the taste is not bad, considering the alternatives.

The food you need should last at least three days. In any disaster scenario, grocery stores are quickly emptied out. If you are not on the scene, quickly enough, you may come up empty. You do not want to carry a lot of cans as they can get very heavy, very quickly. Dried snacks, while not as satisfying as a sandwich, can be carried easily.

The popularity of dehydrated foods, in general, make these items easy to find. There are a number of meals designed for survival eating and these can be packed quickly. They will need a little water to make to make a meal and many people use these even for camping trips.

You will need a tent or tarp to drape over something for protection from rain and other weather conditions. Most people succumb to the elements when they are constantly on the move like you may have to be. A bed roll or sleeping bag for each member of your party is crucial. You might be on that run for quite some time and you will need the rest that a warm bed provides.

All medications you need must be included as well as a good first aid kit. A quality knife or can opener for anything you bring or find will often be overlooked when packing, so make sure to grab it first. You should also try to bring a hand crank radio to find out what is going on so you know when you can head home, if possible.
