By Ben Kingsley

The state of Indiana divorce records are generated when a couple decides to nullify their marriage because of issues in their relationship that they can no longer resolve. A divorce record is a document that the local residents of Indiana can access and retrieve if they have a need for it.

Properly documenting the separation makes it easy to be used in any matters that require legal documents. Divorce documents are important files that are used in many transactions in the government. An example of these transactions includes the update in one's marital status as well as the list of one's beneficiaries and dependents. It would serve as proof of one's status. The document is also one of sources of information in updating the family history tree. Information about the divorce of a couple is not very important information for genealogy but the later generation would face challenges if it is not updated.

The divorce records issued in the state of Indiana would contain basic information about the separation. The document would show details such as where and when the divorce was legalized and registered. Aside from that, one would also find basic information of the couple's marriage such as the date and the place when they got married. The complete name of the divorcees and the people who witnessed the separation would complete the legal document.

Further details of the separation are kept hidden from public access. Information about the reason for the separation is kept confidential together with the name of the person who filed the petition for the divorce. One would not find the details about the agreement of the assets and the properties of the couple in a public document. If the couple has children, the children's custody is also kept private. This was done to respect the divorcee's privacy.

Most states archive and releases copies of the divorce records through the state's Vital Records Section. However, in Indiana, the Vital Records Section does not release copies of such document. The state office only helps to verify and identify where to obtain the document from. The local county clerk offices are the one responsible for keeping track and releasing copies of such file. This means that one has to go to the county where the separation was filed in order to get a copy of the divorce certificate. The state of Indiana only releases the copy if the one who requested it is the divorcees themselves or their immediate family. Others would have to secure a special request to gain access to the files of other people.

Going to the county clerk office to conduct a divorce records search is the recommended method in obtaining such document. But with the help of the Internet, the retrieval process has changed and improved. It is now easier and faster to request such document. With this, it has eliminated the need to go to any government office just to file the request. The request can be done anytime and anywhere Internet access is available making it convenient for most of the residents of Indiana.
