Maui's Diverse Collection Of Beaches

By Ella Hemmings

If you love nothing more than spending the day on a scenic beach, then Maui is probably a great match for you. The second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, Maui offers dozens of beaches and each is especially suitable for specific activities.

Hawaiians love to surf which isn't surprising considering that their Polynesian ancestors invented this popular sport. There are plenty of great surfing spots on Maui, although some do tend have the big waves more suitable for experienced surfers. If you crave the adrenaline rush of big waves, head to Honolua Bay or perhaps Peahi, which is a fantastic tow-in spot. If you are just starting out, the milder waves at Kaanapali Beach will be a much better option and a lot less intimidating.

After a day or two of surfing, you might want to switch things up and grab a kayak and explore the island and coastline. There are many kayaking companies providing rentals and guided tours or you can go it alone. For a shorter trek or a trip for beginners, consider kayaking in Kihei. La Perouse Bay is a great spot for any level of kayaker, and Makena Beach or Honolua Bay are other good kayaking spots. Known as "Canoe Beach," Hanako'o Beach Park is a more remote place where locals go get their kayaking fix.

Of course, you don't need a surfboard or kayak to enjoy the water, many people simply just enjoy swimming or snorkeling in Maui's waters. DT Flemming is a great spot for swimmers, with several coves ideal for splashing about. Families often head to Kahekili Beach Park due to the mild waves and shallow waters. Snorkeling can be enjoyed at many beaches, such as Kahekili Beach or you can opt for a boat trip out to the Molokini crater. This is located just off the coast and snorkelers typically can see turtles and some colorful fish near this volcanic crater.

Of course, many travelers come to Maui for the romance. and there are plenty of beaches particularly suitable for couples. Weddings are a common occurrence in Maui. In fact, thousands of couples tie the knot in Maui each year. Some of the best beach wedding venues include Kapalua Bay, which is an excellent venue for a late afternoon wedding. DT Flemming, Napili Bay, Makena Cove and Keawakapu Beach are just a few other enticing choices.
