By Ben Kingsley

The Ohio Health Department is the office tasked to preserve the records of Divorce in Ohio. They accept requests for the records but they only keep an index of divorce cases that were filed from 1954 to the present date. If you are looking for divorce decrees, you can go to the specific county Clerk of Court that is in-charge of maintaining the records you want to request for. If you are not aware which county the records can be found, you can ask the Health Department.

The Health Department has an official website where they keep soft copies of public documents, including divorce documents, which they regularly update. There you can find a request form that you can download. You have to complete all the required fields on the form before you submit it back to the department. Failure to appropriately complete the form will result to your request to be rejected. There are certain requirements that you need to comply to get divorce documents. They will depend on which county you will be requesting them. There are also certain fees that you will be charged with. All fees are to be paid only by money order or by check. In case no document is found, no refund will be issued.

Divorce records are the legal papers that support the validity of a divorce. The records will be needed in case a divorced person decides to enter into another marriage in the near future. It is also a source of reference for the distribution of assets, properties and liabilities, arrangements of child rights, and more.

You cannot start a search if you do not know at least the name of the owner of the files that you want to access. Of course, providing more information will make the entire process speedier especially because it takes quite a while to retrieve them from government offices.

If you are looking for another source where you can retrieve the records, there are certain online search tools that cater to supplying public records, including divorce records, to people. They have the consent of the court to do what they do, so you do not have to worry about having troubles with the law. But before you decide which search tool to use, do a little research on their background so that you know if they can be trusted or not. Try to look for what comments other people have on certain search tools.

Are Divorce Records Public? The answer is yes. The public has the right to access them but certain procedures have to be observed. Whoever uses the documents inappropriately will be subject to certain penalties that will be imposed by the court. If you are requesting for the documents of another person, you will only be given a verification of the divorce. Some of the information of the documents are considered confidential and are kept away from the public to protect the right to privacy of the owner of the documents.
