By Julie Green

The symbolism of the white dress is deeply ingrained in the psyche of every bride. Chasity, purity, and innocence are all a part of wearing the white dress, but is that the message you want to convey? A growing number of brides are putting away the white dress and instead donning a wedding dress of color. When deciding your dresses color you must keep an open mind and allow yourself to express yourself with your dress.

Individuality/Personality: Are you eccentric, unique, original? Chances are you have already considered wearing a colored wedding dress, and to the detest of your mother or bridal party have already tried on a rainbow of colored dress. But you are steadfast in the idea that a colored wedding dress best matches your personality. Stick with it! Don't let others try to contain your wild personality and let it shine on your big day. You can try to please them by choosing to wear a veil or using a traditional bridal bouquet. For the bride that is scared of trying on anything that isn't pure white, you must face the cold hard facts that millions of millions of brides have worn a white dress. Why not do something a little original or different? You don't have to go as extreme as wearing a black wedding dress, but why not wear a colorful sash or add dramatic accessories that show off your personality. Don't look like a cookie-cutter bride on your big day, find some way to stand out and shine.

To look bridal or to not to look bridal? The biggest issue that brides contemplate when thinking wearing a colored wedding dress is how "bridal" they want to look on their big day. Every girl fantasizes about wearing the big, flowing princess gown in the traditional white on their wedding day, then when the opportunity arises, they fear straying away. When you look at brides who have chosen to wear a bright and colorful wedding dress on their big day, they often look like they're going to a fancy dinner or the prom; they just don't look bridal. There is a spectrum of how bridal you want to look on your wedding day from traditional all the way up to the unique. What that means is that there is also a happy medium. If you're choosing to wear a colored wedding dress, you can make it more bridal by adding a traditional veil or floral bouquet. Or if you're wearing a white wedding dress you can make your look more original by adding a colored sash, big bold accessories, or unique shoes.

When you look for your wedding dress make sure you shop around with an open mind. Keep your search criteria open to dresses you haven't considered before. Allow yourself to try on white, ivory, blush, and other colorful dresses. Focus more on finding a fit that flatters your figure and find the dress that gives you that "feeling" when you put it on. And don't forget that if you go with a traditional white gown you can spice it up with a colorful sash, colorful wedding accessories, or eye catching shoes. Just don't forget to keep an open mind.

Be prepared to shock a few guests when you show up with some eye catching color when you walk down the aisle. Just remember, once you've found that perfect balance between tradition and color that fits your personality what other people think really doesn't matter.
