New York Marriage License

The state of New York has allowed its residents to access their public documents. This was done in accordance to the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act. With this, access to the marriage records in New York is now easy.

There are several reasons why people in New York request for a copy of a marriage record. One of the common and primary uses of such document is for genealogy research. It has important information that is vital in updating the family history. Such document s also used in a number of transactions done in any government offices. Without it, some transactions may not be processed or it can be denied. Another use of this document is for background check. This is mostly done by people who wish to make sure that they are dating an unmarried individual. By doing so, they can avoid complications should they plan to get married.

Just what are the things that can be found on a marriage certificate issued in New York? As the name implies, it contains details about the marriage of a couple. The names of the couple are documented on the file along with the date and the place when the marriage occurred. One can also find some personal details about the couple such as their date of birth and the name of their parents. Additional information included on the document is the name of the witnesses.

To make the request hassle free, it is recommended to provide vital information about the record that is being requested. This includes the names of the couple along with important details such as the date and the place when the couple got marriage. One will be asked to provide the reason for requesting the document and it should be stated clearly to have the request granted. Aside from providing such information, there are other requirements that should also be given such as the photocopy of one's identification card. It should be government issued ID's such as passport, driver's license, U.S. Military. Once the request has been sent, the requested file can be obtained after a maximum of 12 weeks. This long wait time can be shortened to 4 weeks if one avails of the priority handling but a higher fee may be charged.

Only marriages that have been registered since 1881 are available for request in the state of New York. When requesting for the record to be used in updating the family tree, the record should be at least 50 years old before it can be released. Regular search can cost $30 per request but this can change according to the county laws. Counties such as Buffalo, Albany and Yonkers do not allow release of record in the state office, it can only be dine at the county office and fees are also different.

Records of marriage in New York are now available online. This means that there is no need to go to any office to file the request since it can be done through the Internet. Also, the retrieval of the document can be done in just seconds instead of weeks.
