By Cornelia White

The invention of social media saw the world become transformed into a global village. People can now communicate with each other from all corners of the globe, send each other photos, share ideas, find jobs among other things. The use of social networks in South Africa has increased greatly since the invention of these media. The reason for this great increase is the fact that many individuals in the country have become internet savvy.

There are numerous social media in South Africa where people communicate. Most of them are free to sign up while a few require users to pay some fee before joining the network. Using the media is very easy and it starts by one creating an account using wither an email or telephone number and creating a password to get into the account. This is just the basic requirement to join these media as each specific platform may have its specifications.

To access the networks, one can use the computer or a phone, provided the individual has internet. However, there are certain platforms in South Africa that can only be accessed using mobile phones. Such networks are only for chatting requiring a user to enter only his telephone number. The individual can then chat with people in his or her phone book.

However, not all phones can access the mobile social networks. Only those with that are java enabled or having improved features can do this. Apart from java enabled devices, there are specific platforms that now require one to have a specific mobile handset brand. This is because the platform has been only made to allow people with the specific brand to talk and share things.

As mentioned earlier, people share ideas, look for jobs, advertise their business over these platforms. There are specific social systems which are specifically for professionals looking for jobs and wanting to increase their professional circle. This network has gained its popularity in this country due to the fact that one can meet people in similar profession as his in another country and share ideas.

Another great benefit of the platforms is entrepreneurial people have find them a great avenue to advertise their businesses. They do this by posting their goods and services on the systems. They then urge friends to share it among their friends and soon one is able to get a wide base of clients than he would normally have.

But there have been certain drawbacks with the inception of these systems. There have been many cases where people have been duped to giving money for things that do not exist. Other issues have involved kidnaps and deaths resulting from people meeting other individuals the met over the internet and do not really know them well. All these problems are however avoidable when people take great caution when talking to strangers.

In conclusion, social networks in South Africa have really helped in opening up the country to the world. This proves the saying that the world is becoming a global village. However, safety while on the social media should not be forgotten while people share information, pictures, meet new friends, chat and help other people in need.
