What You Need To Know About PLC Programming Services

By Leticia Jensen

In the city of Hudson, WI, there are many companies which offer PLC programming services to local residents. While programmable logic controllers may be very popular in industrial automation, they have also found their way into homes. Currently, they are used in home automation systems as well as commercial building automation. Basically, PLCs can be used to automate any process, whatever the magnitude. Despite their wide range of uses, only experts can program these devices.

PLCs normally come with numerous ports. These are can be divided into three categories. They are: input ports; output ports; and power ports. This device runs entirely on direct current. Protective and signal conditioning circuits must therefore be put in place to ensure that over and under-voltages do not affect system performance.

The main function of input ports is to accept input signals from switches and sensors in the plant. There are many types of sensors in existence. However, the most popular ones include light dependent resistors (LDRs), photodiodes, emergency switches, voltage dividers and thermocouples among others. The signals from these devices must be transformed into a form that can be accepted by the PLC.

PLC outputs are normally connected to actuators via relays. The logic controller normally produces 5V DC output. This is only used to energize relays that are connected to the power circuit of external devices. There are many types of actuators in any process. For instance, a simple air conditioning system may have, heaters, refrigerators and fans as the actuators. Other types of actuators include light bulbs, motors, alarms and solenoid valves among others.

PLC programmers are usually electrical engineers who majored in instrumentation and control. These specialists have a deeper understanding of electro-mechanical processes. They are therefore in a better position to design automatic control systems. Control engineers also have knowledge in fields such as pneumatics and hydraulic systems. They are therefore best suited for the job.

Programming cannot be done before the programmer assesses the needs of the plant or system to be controlled. This may require site visits. The programmer will also take specifications of sensors and actuators. The next step is to interview the client to find out what their objectives are as far as automation is concerned.

There are several languages that can be used by a programmer to write instructions for a PLC. However, the most popular programming language is the Ladder Logic. In this language, instructions are written in rungs or steps that form a ladder. Relay symbols are primarily used in this language. Others are timers and switches. The process of writing these instructions is very simple for a trained person.

After writing a program, programmers must first simulate them before they install the PLC in the plant. Simulation helps in the identification of errors, or bugs, in the program. Some PLC programming software have inbuilt simulators, but others do not. The latter normally rely on separate programs.

There are many factors that must be considered by consumers when they are searching for effective PLC programmers. However, the most important ones include price, experience and professional qualifications. Prospective clients should also consider the turnaround times of a programmer.
