Funny Turbans Around The World

By Cathy Mercer

Turbans have been worn for centuries all over the world for protection against the elements and for religious reasons. More recently they have become fashion items too, even being worn by Hollywood celebrities and models. A new facet of this fashion trend is funny turbans where people experiment with different embellishments.

A turban is often worn in a specific way according to the culture of the wearer. This distinguishes them from other groups and cultures. To their own culture or group, a wearer looks completely normal, whereas to an outsider they may appear strange. With increased globalization, Westerners are more exposed to the sight of people all over the world wearing different headgear, sometimes vastly different to anything they have seen before.

There are certain groups whose headgear makes them extremely noticeable. One example is an order of Sikh armed monks who wear enormous head attire with steel quoits. This order of warrior monks was known for its fierceness in battle and they are still regarded with great respect. Those who are not aware of their illustrious history might simply regard them as strange and weird.

In North India, particularly in Rajasthan, a man who does not sport a turban is not considered to be formally dressed. There are thousands of different styles, types and colors worn. The tying of this head attire is considered to be an art, requiring much practice. A turban shows where its wearer comes from, what he does for a living and its size indicates his position in society.

To the Sikhs, wearing a turban has great spiritual significance. It is regarded as a gift from above. Sikhs do not cut their hair and covering their long hair with this item prevents it from becoming tangled or being polluted by tobacco smoke and any other pollutants. The colors traditionally worn are saffron orange for wisdom and blue for valor. Black and white are also commonly worn with red often being worn for weddings.

A turban is a sacred item for many people and this should be respected. However, for some wearing one is simply an expression of style or an opportunity to be different. Piedad Cordoba who is a politician in Colombia, makes a point of wearing colorful, ornate headgear and she is well known for this. Many African woman can be seen wearing beautifully colorful, patterned headgear.

When looking for a special turban, it is important to buy from the right source to ensure that you are getting the best quality for your money. Your choice of material, color and style will depend on the purpose for which you want it. Online stores are popular today and they enable you to choose from a wide variety as well as to compare prices.

Although the turban has been around for centuries, it has become a popular fashion trend once again. They can be embellished with just about any accessory, making them extremely versatile. A choice of creatively accessorized funny turbans are available for those who want to try something different.
