Important Information About The IVF Method

By Zoe Eagles

IVF, which is short for In Vitro Fertilization, is something that couples often get when they have trouble creating a child. The treatment is not always successful and can take a very exacting toll on couples. However, if you're a couple and you have fertility problems, then this might be the only way you can have a child.

If you think that IVF is something that could be for you, then your best bet is to get as much information on the procedures and processes as possible. This is so that you know exactly what you're getting into. Maybe you have mates that have been through the treatment, or you have relatives that have had it done. Just try to ask as many questions as you possibly can. By finding out what to expect, you should be in a better position to cope with what happens.

When a couple conceives a child, the man's sperm and the woman's egg meet up in the Fallopian tubes. These tubes act as a bridge between the ovaries and the uterus. Once the sperm and the egg are together, the sperm fertilizes the egg by penetrating it. When someone undergoes IVF this process happens outside of the body. A female's eggs are removed by a surgeon and the process done in a laboratory with a sperm sample. The fertilized egg is then implanted back into a woman's womb.

It needs to be understood that there is no guarantee that a woman will become pregnant by having this done. In fact, the stats suggest that around 20-25% of females actually get pregnant. The good news is that since In vitro fertilization first started in the 1970s, the success rate has improved. Hopefully, with more advanced medical care, this trend in the success rate can continue.

It has been generally accepted that women under the age of forty have a better chance of giving birth through this method that those over 40. Stats show a dramatic drop in success rates over females over 40. However, as medical treatments advance, this might all change one day, so keep up to date with developments.

Many couples undergo some form of counselling during and after the process. The toll it takes can be quite profound for some, that's why it's important to have a support system. Many places actually offer counselling as standard but some may not. If you are unsure, or have not been offered it, just ask.

In Vitro Fertilization does not come without some risk attached. There have been cases of some females giving birth to triplets and quadruplets after having IVF. This might be many women's idea of utopia, but there can be complications when you have multiple births. Some babies have been known to be underweight at birth and others have been known to be born prematurely. Some might consider this to be not much of a risk, especially if they've been trying to have children for many years.

IVF should be considered very seriously by those who have problems conceiving children. Bear in mind that the chances of conceiving appear to decrease as a woman gets older, and ask around so that you have an idea of what to expect. The process itself is very thorough, doctors are there to help. They even check your eggs for potential birth defects before they are fertilized.
