Online Relationships? Not!

Be forewarned! If you are a fan of Internet dating, cyber sex, etc., and enjoy spending your time with a computer rather than a real person, this article is not for you.

Recently, in my conversations with friends, both men and women, we discussed the subject of online dating, cyber sex, and of course, Internet relationships. Now in this age of technology expanding ever more quickly and the Internet making it possible to meet and communicate with people you would never meet any other way, it's natural that people would use the Internet as a tool for meeting other people. OK, so that's cool, and why not? But what about the people who meet online but never in real life? What's the fascination with that? If you merely want a fantasy, you can always practice, well, self-satisfaction. I mean, really, isn't that what it really is after all?

Therefore, who would prefer this type of relationship over the traditional, in person, face to face kind? Here's the reasons my friends and I came up with:

1. In real life you are very shy and introverted and maybe even a social moron.

2. You like to use the Internet to utter the sexually detailed prose you read on Penthouse Forum which you don't have the courage to say to a real person in real life.

3. Your self-confidence is extremely low and you have no self-esteem. The computer monitor gives you a veil to hide behind.

4. Your online photo is more than 10 years old.

5. Even worse, you look nothing like your online photo and therefore cannot meet anyone in person for fear of being exposed for the troll you really are.

6. You are posing as a gender other than the one you were born into.

7. You are married and posing as single or separated.

8. You are sexually inadequate and no one has to know that in cyber space.

9. You wish to avoid true intimacy.

10. Tactile sensations are not important in your world.

With all the webcam invites and 'don't ya want me baby' messages sent via instant messaging or Facebook, I would venture to say there are many people simply too intimidated or awkward to approach a living, breathing human being. For those I would recommend checking out the Who's Your Daddy sites, or something of that nature.

So hey, maybe the online thing is your thing. It's a free country so have fun with it. You just may want to consider whether or not the object of your fantasy is enjoying the attention.
